8년의 세월을 견딘 SmallHD Focus 5
▶ 여전한 현역, SmallHD Focus 5
SmallHD Focus 5는 2017년 6월, 입문형 전문 필드 모니터로 출시되었습니다. 출시된 지 9년이 지나 후속 모델인 Action 5가 나왔지만, 저에게는 여전히 유용한 장비입니다. 106g(배터리 제외)의 초경량 설계로 휴대성이 뛰어나고, 전용 OS와 터치스크린 덕분에 스마트폰처럼 직관적인 조작이 가능합니다. 800nit의 밝기와 웨이브폼, 폴스 컬러, LUT 기능은 지금 봐도 작업 효율이 훌륭합니다.
참고로 스몰HD 포커스 5에 설치 가능한 최신 펌웨어는 SmallHD PageOS 6 (버전 6.0.1 2024년 12월 13일) 입니다. 이후 펌웨어 버전은 포커스 5를 지원하지 않습니다. (펌웨어 다운로드는 아래 링크 참조)

▶ 세월의 흔적과 고질적인 문제들
하지만 오랜 시간 사용하다 보니 외부 하우징에 흠집이 생겼고, 특히 독자적인 슬림 규격의 Micro HDMI 단자에서 잦은 접속 불량이 발생하는 '노화 현상'이 나타났습니다. 또한, 전원 버튼 외에 물리적 조작부가 없고 HDMI 출력 단자가 없는 구조적 한계와, 일반 범용 케이블을 사용하려면 단자를 개조해야 하는 불편함이 있었습니다.
▶ 맞춤형 케이지 설계, 보호를 넘어 확장으로
그동안 함께한 시간에 대한 감사의 마음을 담아, 본체 보호와 기능 개선을 위한 전용 맞춤 케이지를 직접 디자인했습니다. 이번 제작의 핵심 목표는 다음과 같습니다.
- 커스텀 클램프 설계: 내구성이 약한 Micro HDMI 단자를 견고하게 고정하여 접속 불량 문제를 근본적으로 해결했습니다.
- 액세서리 확장성 강화: 케이지 곳곳에 1/4인치 나사 홀과 **Arri 위치 홀(Arri Locating Holes)**을 배치하여, 매직 암이나 기타 액세서리를 안정적으로 장착할 수 있도록 했습니다.
- 하우징 보호: 세월을 견뎌온 본체에 새로운 보호구를 선물하여 외부 충격으로부터 안전하게 보호합니다.

초경량과 컴팩트함을 좋아하는 저에게 Focus 5는 여전히 매력적인 장비입니다. 이번에 제작한 맞춤 케이지 덕분에 접속 불량 스트레스에서 벗어나 다시 현역으로 활약할 수 있게 되었습니다.
[Build Log] 8 Years with SmallHD Focus 5: Designing a Custom Dedicated Cage
The SmallHD Focus 5 was released in June 2017 as an entry-level professional field monitor. Although nine years have passed and the successor, Action 5, is now available, it remains an incredibly useful piece of gear for me. Its ultra-lightweight design, weighing about 106g (excluding battery), offers excellent portability. Thanks to the dedicated OS and touchscreen, it is as intuitive to use as a smartphone. With 800 nits of brightness and features like waveform, false color, and LUT support, it still delivers great workflow efficiency today.
※ The latest firmware available for the SmallHD Focus 5 is SmallHD PageOS 6 (version 6.0.1, December 13, 2024). Later firmware versions do not support the Focus 5.
However, after years of use, the external housing has accumulated many scratches. More importantly, it began showing signs of "aging," specifically frequent connection issues with the proprietary slim-spec Micro HDMI port. Additionally, it has structural limitations such as a lack of physical controls other than the power button and no HDMI output. There was also the inconvenience of having to modify standard cables to fit the unique port.
As a token of gratitude for the time we've spent together, I designed a custom dedicated cage to protect the body and improve its functionality. The key objectives of this build are as follows:
Custom Clamp Design: I integrated a cable clamp to firmly secure the fragile Micro HDMI port, fundamentally solving the connection stability issue.
Enhanced Accessory Expandability: I added multiple 1/4-inch screw holes and Arri Locating Holes throughout the cage, allowing for the stable mounting of magic arms and other accessories.
Housing Protection: By gifting a new "armor" to the aging body, I ensured it is safely protected from external impacts.
As someone who loves ultra-light and compact gear, the Focus 5 is still an attractive device. Thanks to this custom cage, I am now free from the stress of connection issues and ready to put it back into active service.
